With the advancement of technology, the EDID standard is constantly updated and expanded to support higher resolutions.

Making the communication between computers and display screens more intelligent and automated to provide a better user experience and ensure optimal performance of the display.

Follow iSEMC’s article to learn more about EDID.

EDID function

What is EDIE?

The full name of EDID is Extended Display Identification Data. The EDID of VGA and DVI consists of a main block of 128 bytes.

The EDID of HDMI adds an extension block (128 bytes). The content of the extension block is mainly related to audio attributes.

DVI and VGA do not have audio, HDMI has audio.

Why does the controller use EDID?

To allow PCs or other image output devices to better identify the properties of video walls.

There are more and more types of monitors, and each monitor cannot support all resolutions.  Outputting one resolution may damage the monitor hardware.

EDID appeared to allow PCs or other image output devices to better identify monitor attributes.

iSEMC video controllers have EDID function and supports the resolution of 4K@60hz, so that there is  a significant advantage on the processing speed and image display.

Is there only one EDID per monitor?

Today's monitors are very powerful and usually provide a variety of video interfaces.

Common ones include DVI, VGA, HDMI, Display Port, etc. Due to the different characteristics and bandwidth of each interface, the EDID of different interfaces is also different.

Whichever interface is used, the PC reads the EDID of that interface. Our equipment mainly uses DVI, VGA, and HDMI interfaces.

Due to several formats of the VIDEO interface, such as PAL, NTSC, etc., their resolution and field frequency are fixed.

What else does EDID do?

The EDID contains parameters about the monitor and its capabilities.

Including vendor information, maximum image size, color settings, manufacturer presets, frequency range limitations, and strings for the monitor name and serial number.

To put it figuratively, EDID is a collection of ID cards, household registers, skill certificates, and other documents displayed on the monitor.

The importance of EDID in HDMI matrix switchers

The EDID data function is widely used in HDMI matrix switchers, and it is also very suitable.

During use, our HDMI matrix switcher needs to be connected to an output device to display the picture.

With the different needs, there are more and more display devices on the market. Through the HDMI matrix switcher, the EDID information of any output display device can be read back and switched to any other output display device.

The function of EDID is can improve the compatibility of the HDMI matrix and can output images on computer monitors, TVs, projectors, large screens, splicing screens, and other display devices.

The role of EDID

  1. Simplify signal transmission

EDID can help video sources automatically identify the best resolution and refresh rate, thereby simplifying the signal transmission process and reducing equipment requirements.

There is no need to manually adjust resolution and refresh rate while ensuring compatibility of video sources and displays.

  1. Improve display quality

EDID can ensure that display devices work at optimal resolution and refresh rates, thereby improving display quality.

Get clearer, more stable images thanks to improved compatibility between video sources and monitors.

At the same time, EDID can also identify the characteristics and capabilities of the display, thereby helping better communication between the video source and the display.

  1. Reduce device compatibility issues

Since different display devices will have different resolutions and refresh rates, manually adjusting these parameters is difficult.

EDID can help eliminate these device compatibility issues while also protecting your device from incompatible devices.

How to use EDID?

  1. Setting method

Using EDID requires some special setup. First, you need to use an EDID-capable display and video source, as not all devices can support EDID.

Then, enable the EDID option in settings to enable this feature.

  1. Connection method

There are some things to note when connecting EDID.

First, make sure your video source and display device are properly connected. Second, make sure that the connected fiber optic extension cables and EDID devices support the correct signals and transmission speeds.

Finally, check whether the connection is stable to ensure the quality of the signal.

  1. Adjust parameters

If the settings are incorrect, some problems may occur, such as screen flickering, and incorrect resolution.

At this time some parameter adjustments need to be made. First, you can try to manually set the resolution and refresh rate to solve the problem.

If manual settings still cannot solve the problem, then you need to check whether the connected device supports EDID or try to connect with other devices.

Advantages and Disadvantages of EDID

  1. Advantages

EDID protects devices from damage from incompatible devices while providing better video quality and ease of signal transmission.

  1. Disadvantages

EDID requires special settings, and without the correct settings, various problems may occur.

In addition, EDID is not supported by all devices, and sometimes you need to purchase additional accessories.

Final thought

EDID can help eliminate device compatibility issues and improve video quality and ease of signal transmission. Therefore, it is very important to use EDID in modern multimedia devices. We need to pay attention to using and setting EDID correctly to get the best video quality.
